Ive found with some of my younger birds the line between where the colours will be purple and yellow is more defined in a cock, the hens tend to have a softer blending of the youngsters colours.

With the fuller head look, watch when you see a adult cock bird really sing they sort of fluff up their head feathers making them look bigger, thats what I was meaning.
Jayburd is right the bird does have quite bright blue ring.
As west finch says the young males tend to try their singing skills.
