Yipee! bred my first Cordon bleus. 2 little ones on the perch tonight. Took nearly 2 years and 2 different pairs. Funny thing is, I had no idea that they were nesting. Even funnier, this all took place while I was extending my finch aviary. Luckily I didn't disturb them too much. Pulled the back off and pulled divisions out of 4 small parrot flights and now have a 6x3m planted flight. The finches love the extra room and look so much better! So hopefully more cordons to come.

Sorry everyone..I just can't get this pic posting thing right. Love to show off my new aviary!
With the foriegn finches, I have really struggled to keep up enough livefood when they are rearing young. This has been my no.1 reason for not breeding more of the cubans, cordons etc. Just don't have the time to breed my own gents and mealworms, so lately have been buying tubs of large mealworms. Expensive I know, but seems to have done the trick in this case. The Cordons have been particularly frustrating, nesting constantly but not rearing the chicks past a week old. Cordons were one of the first finches that I got when I decided to keep a few again. I always wanted some but wasn't really prepared for this species in terms of providing livefood ( let that be a LESSON to all you newbie finch addicts!) Always had and always be a PARROT person, but Gotta love finches!
