If you have access to Dr Rob Marshall's book, Gouldian and Finch Health, you will find that he discusses " dead in shell " as being associated with Streptococcal infections, usually found in mutation gouldians. Usually in conjunction with symptoms like, skin irritations, foot or eye infections, excessive beak scratching, plus others.
He lists Moxi-T as the treatment, but I would recommend that you contact an avian vet before administering any home treatment.

Thanks Polar I wil have a look into that, they are not showing any other symptoms, they are bred in cabinets and i think the breeder they came from also used cabinets so i did wonder if it was a vitamin D issue, I've since bought some solvet D which I sprinkle on the soaked seed just in case.

I was worried about the smallest blue chick last night as he hatched 2 days later than the first so was a little bit smaller than the others and was missing out at feeding time, I checked them 3 times today each time checking that he had been fed and moving him to the front of the nest so he can get some food as the slightly bigger chicks kept pushing him to the back, he had been fed each time I checked and is gaining some size so hopefully will catchup with the others now.

Hi all,
I think you will find that the streptococcal issue is just one of many possible causes.
Improving diet & hygiene all help with these guys and you can always have a post mortem exam of the egg by an avian vet to determine the underlying cause ie is it shell thickness issues?infection?Nutritional?

Vetafarm sell Spectovet Antibiotic in the US for the treatment of streptococcal but I don't seem to be able to find it Australia.

Hi Simba,
You will find that most diseases with finches have multiple possible causes, I was merely giving you something to check initially, that is a known problem with the blues. If you wish to solve a problem you have to start looking somewhere.
