Well i couldnt help myself recently at the nowra bird sale. And i aquired what i originally wanted which was a seagreen parrot finch hen. But also got myself a blue hen and normal green cock black mask pair. There supposedly 2 years old and i got erm for $25
I bred peach faced and such as a kid and can remember that green grass thrown into there aviary sent them absolutly beserk and bred stacks. But intrested to know if anyone else has any tricks or info they could share with me? There great little guys and very happy in inqusitive. have also gone straight into there nest box to sleep at night. And so far when ever i go near them they fly straight back to there box and hide from me. But yea there cool birds.
They are great birds which if they are only 2 yr old and fed/housed right will give you plenty of young.
Masked are far more shy than peachfaces and even fischers hence why they head straight for the box when they see you.
Put some a base in their box, I use either peat moss or wood shavings, and offer them fresh material in the cage and they'll pretty much get right into it. I use braches with less leaves as the leaves make a mess. I also give them the corn husks when I husk my fresh corn.
They don't need alot of room. I keep 3 pairs in a suspended which is 2.4m long, 950mm wide and 120mm high. I have another pair in a suspended cage which is only about 900mm long by 600x600mm.
A basic good quality seed (the less sunflower the better in my opinion) and plenty of greens. They love endive, but you can tyr anything full of vitamins and less water (eg lettuce). A bit of fruit once or twice a week is fine.
You should consider joining the ALBSA, plenty of experienced breeders who will share knowledge via emails when needed.
Lovebirds are very unpopular atm, probably due to how easy they are to breed which has led to them being worth virtually nothing. This makes it really hard to source particular birds when you are after them. When you buy lovebirds you should really consider how pure they appear to be. Peachface hybreds are easy to spot but masked x fischers are much harder. Try and focus on breeding bird true to type.
I only keep masked now, and am trying to maintain a 100% pure (as in no split) normal masked line, the blue series and an albino line. I've kept them for about 20 years so feel free to ask anything and if I can help you I'll be more then happy.
