I use a natural non-toxic detergent and give them a good scrub with hot water, blast them off with the hose and pour kettle water over them, then dry tham and leave them in the sun... then back in they go :) but microwave could work too :?:

I cant imagine the smell from microwaved nest boxes  I usually make a bucket of hot water with a dash of bleach and scub like mad!
I always throw the old bedding away, Ive never found any old nest material to be clean enough to reuse.

You have a point there about the smell.I wouldn't use old nesting material either.Maybe someone out there will own up microwaving an old nest or something similar.

I can't see any problem useing a microwave to sterilise old nests. Be damed if I would be useing the microwave for anything else ever again though!

I am going on about microwaves again and away from the original post but i found others on an another forum use it for at least three different reasons.
1.Nuke beach sand for aviary floors
2.Garden moss to kill any nasties and their eggs
3.Cuttle fish bone, soak dry and then microwave for a minute or so.
