The plastic split rings will fall off an Orange Breast and even had Ruddies throwing them off . Perfect for Goulds and Emblema.

I like Lentras aluminium split rings , most come in multi sizes , its just getting over that clamping it on thing ...scared I was going to slip and amputate the birds .

You're up late! I've only put the plastic ones on that come with the little applicator like a spoon. Are they called Split? Found that nerve racking enough on the OBs so dreading doing it again.

Bushranger also suggested using the aluminium ones on the OBs but we are too nervous about hurting the birds...

Thats been my fear too, another reason why I chose the split plastic. Although I do like how small and neat looking the split metal ones are. A question though, as Im using a system where each colour represents a number is it possible to get two different coloured split metal rings on one leg when I get to the triple numbers?
For example a bird numbered 53 would wear bands
red on the left leg as the bird faces you and blue on the right
if I was to band a bird whos number was 153 I would need
brown and red on the left and blue on the right, not sure if this double up would cause problems for the bird.
I know I have the option of bands with numbers on them but this would mean birds wouldnt be identifiable from a distance as the numbers are pretty small. I really want to be able to identify individual birds not just a group of birds that hatched from one particular year or one set of parents.

The tool ( applicator )from Lentra is easier to use than it looks and also removes the aluminium leg rings if needed .
It is however more expensive with the rings being 10 for $10 and the tool $50.00 .(going on small parrot size here ).
It is a 2 person job for sure and a bit scary at first .The aluminium rings are small enough to double up I think .
They are coloured and numbered .
Again its personal choice and there's nothing wrong with the plastic ebay type for the bigger finches .

When doing research on small species like Silvereyes, 2 and rarely, three bands on each leg was fine. Just be careful with overgrown rear nails in species like nuns as the second ring sits higher and can sometimes grab the point of the rear nail when roosting and trap it.

redwing, tony at nutriwing has two differant sises in the aluminium rings , they are not that hard to put on ,even with my shreck fingers....or they sell them at the finch club... has ones small enough to fit ob ruddies etc its around $4 for 10 rings...pete

Hi Pete, Have tried the finch club but the last 2 times he was waiting on an order or had just sold out of finch ones. That's why I thought I'd try somewhere else so will have some ready. Would really like small numbers of different colours so I can band like Di does where each colour =a different number.
