This morning when I went down to the main aviary to feed and water the gaggle (including 16 baby ghouldians and two just fledegd orange breasts), i noticed a peculiar sight. One of my young canaries had its head and wing poking out of a knot hole of a hollow nesting log. After closer inspection I decided it was stuck.. What to do? After entering the aviary i realised he had got himself well and truely wedged and the more I tried to free him one way the more he pushed the other. Long story short i managed to work him out the way he'd gone in. Bit of feather damage to neck and upper wing (doesn't seem broken) Antiseptic spray applied and into an isolation cage. When I left for work he was sitting on the perch, so hopefully will still be ok when i get home after my 12 hour shift...
Never a dull moment with birds!

Feather damage will probably correct itself next molt and if its sitting on a perch I suspect that it flew there so no real chance of broken bones. Sitting on a perch is good coz if it staying the floor might mean unseen problems. I would also fix the knot in the log so this didn't happen again.

I came home to a dead gouldian youngster upside down in the V of a branch...how it got there and why it couldn't back out defeats me.S*** happens I guess, even in the wild.

Thanks all, Yeah i guess it went exploring as "teenagers" do, he seemed healthy this morning when i applied another dose of antiseptic. I'd say just a bit sore and sorry, just got to hope doesn't get any secondary infection or abcess.
