I remember reading a thread a while back where there was mention of the effect of mixing or separating head colours and the sex ratio of the offspring. unfortunately I have forgotten the details! I have a feeling that keeping head colours separate increased the number of males. if this is the case, is there any way of balancing gender ratio without compromising on the quality of colours?

Hi Flap,
Sarah Pryke did the research on this. Mixed head colours results in about 80% male offspring.

Thanks PG. I was worried it was the reverse, which would have been an issue as we are trying to keep different head colours separate. will have to look her up.

she gave a great presentation on it at the convention. it was really amazing to hear. even a RH split BH cock paired with a RH hen will throw many more cocks than hens. hopefully my YH to YH pair that just fledged 6 young will be 3 and 3!!! haven't forgotten the one i owe you flap

Well done spanna! we have a whole lot of RH young, so far can only tell some of the males as they start to sing, and there seem to be quite a few!!!! We have 10 that are a few months old now, and 7-8 fledglings in the last couple of days... Not much luck with YH thanks to mice. As soon as RH young weaned will rehome them all and put YH in the aviary to give them a chance to breed!
