Nearly finished my new fly box based on southys design, with a few changes.
viewtopic.php?f=84&t=2981&p=14592&hilit=flybox#p14592
Has a reptile 80 watt heat cord zig zaged inside in the shelf runs glued with kwik grip. Also a micro climate thermostat to keep a constant temp. The 7 watt low voltage globe is outside the box but still inside the fridge,For two reasons, one they seem to blow abit inside the box,Two it will be easy to change outside the box.It also has two shelves underneath the fly area, allowing for storage in the warmth for magots growing out and cleaning out to feed,The fridge could have been bigger,as it is quite small really. But it was given to me by a friend for a maggot fridge and I could not say no.

It is still untested and probley over the top for a maggot box but I like to tinker.I will let you know how it goes in the coming weeks. After I let it air out a bit more before putting in flies.I will still run the other box for the season if all goes well,And maybe make another bigger fridge box later in the year.

Danny I have a low wattage long life gobe aswell 7 watt i think on all the time. The globe is on the outside of the fly wire it is very easy to change and does not get dirty. If i mad another one i would run the cord i think just down one side to the bottom,As the bottom is a couple degrees cooler.

Thanks. I was thinking of a compact fluoro so it provides 24 hours of light so the flies can get to business regardless of the time of the day and limited chance of it blowing. Mine will have a 90W heat cord, recessed into routed grooves in the timber back and held in place with aluminium tap that act as as a heat sink and draws the heat out nicely. This will be coupled with a pulse proportional microclimate like yours. I'll post some pics when done.

my mother doesn't go in my shed - that dosen't mean I can have a colony of flies breeding maggots
actually, my mum's OK with the idea - she's seen and held maggots, they're not so bad, it's my dad I have to convince!

the only time they smell real bad is when you go away for a few days and dont attend to them.
