Ive read a fiar bit on how people use societies as foster parents for gouldians eggs and the chicks, the problem is i dont know if its better to use the 1 male 1 female, 2 males or 3 females or is it 3 males 2 female. Im looking at the combination with same sex as i dont wont the societies to be reproducing themselves. Im just looking for personal opinions and some fostering setup cages or breeding cages that suit people also.
Thanks
Societies as fosters for gouldians

No offence but why would you bother with fosters ? Gouldians arent hard to breed and generally have no trouble rearing their own young.

I dont think you will find many using any Bengalese as fosters for gouldians, it seems to be a USA and European thing. In Australia its mainly aviary or cabinet breeding with the Gouldian parents.
Bengalese can be carriers of several diseases, Campylobacter and Cochlosoma would be two of the mostly worrying if you are using them to foster gouldians as gouldians are susceptible to these diseases. If the Benaglese carry these infections they dont show any signs themselves but pass on the infection by feeding the young.
If you do intend to go ahead you would need firstly a "clean strain" of bengalese. I have no idea how this would done other than finding a vet who could test each bird.
Another thing to consider is the timing needed to synchronise the Gouldians and the Bengalese so that the fosters would accept the eggs or chicks. From memory I read that it can take at least 3 pairs of fosters per pair of Gouldians when fostering.
Then of course if they do rear successfully you have imprinting to think about.
Far too much trouble for me when Gouldians are perfectly capable of rearing their own chicks and in my opinion probably far better at it than a foster. The most I would do is move a chick to another gouldian nest if absolutely necessary and only if I was sure the parents were bullet proof rearers

As i just posted in your other thread, there's usually no real need to foster gouldians here in Australia as most of our birds will rear their own young without problems. Some breeders often have a few fosters on hand in case of emergency. I have heard that a couple of male Societies are usually the preferred option for fosters.

It would seem this thread has been posted twice:

Perhaps some kind admin would be so kind as to merge the two into one...

Gouldians will do fine without the need to foster, its not really practiced here in australia compared with overseas.
once you have practice with zebs then move onto the gouldians, find a local breeder have a good chat about how they house them, feed, etc.
some websites and books are misleading or old. always good to chat to as many local breeders and get ideas and tips from them.
throw them in an aviary and they will breed freely, and you will be able to enjoy them, having them in sml cages and fiddling around with fostering would take the fun and joy out of it for me.
best of luck

One of the main reasons why people will foster is due the gouldians abandoning the nest, if this is so it happens to alot to the best of us breeders. The best way to go about it would be as Diane stated, to use another pair of gouldians. If its the case of air sac mites theory that's trying to eradicate it by fostering, best to treat the parents for the problem them let them breed as normal.

I have both Gouldians and Bengos. But I sure do not have them raising each others chicks. Apart from the fact that it is completely unnecessary all types of finches should be encouraged to raise their own young. Or you are perpetuating a line of cuckoos.
