The first thing you must learn about bird sales, be ready to go in when the doors are opened.
By 11am most good birds were gone Glen B breeds excellent quality birds he took 38 and all were gone just after 11
infact i was on the road home before 12.
In fact the best part was meeting 4 fellow Forum members.
Please don't be disheartened by your first sale, they are also a good social get together.
Pencil in the 23Oct that from memory is when the Hunter Bird Club has their sale and generally there are quite alot of good quality finches
available.
Sorry didn't realise you were from Melb.Ballarat is generally an exceptional sale and only about an hour out of Melb.

Hi Brett..I agree with the other posts...it's essential you get there at least 15 minutes before the doors open...I have been to 3 sales this year in Victoria (Geelong, Goulburn Valley and Mornington)...at all shows there were over priced birds and birds that looked like they should be in a hospital cage....simply stear clear of these birds....look for ones that you feel are healthy and robost and reasonably priced...I also look at the state of their cages...I will never buy from a seller who cannot display their birds in a clean environment...don't be disillusioned...just stick to the standards you want and keep looking until you find it...cheers, Paul

I’m pleased I had made a few purchases before the sale as I did a lot better.
If I had of relied on the Mornington sale I would be an extra $400 out of pocket.
Some of finches were scruffy and oc'd; however I have still seen much worse in shops. Also watch for the differences in pricing- Cubans varied between $60-$90 pr.
A mate was happy to buy a nice Cordon B pair for $60.

hi Brett
i agree with E Orix . But it is also good that you have a benchmark regarding the quality of birds that you are willing to fork out your hard earned for . the advice i would give before going to your next sale is have in mind what you are chasing and the price you are willing to pay , keeping in mind that sometimes a higher than average price is worth paying for quality birds . i have been to many sales and left with nothing . i have also payed top dollar in pet shops for the odd bird which was just too good to pass up.
regards

I realized that If I had to choose, I would rather have birds than airplanes.
