I have Cubans but never put them other birds yet, going to try in my new aviery and going to put the with bengos don't want to take the risk of putting them in with my more exotic finches. My brother had Cubans in a mixed collection, he had gouldians ,African fires, ons, st helenas and canaries. They never seemed to bother anybody else only had a bit of Bush that nothing could go near and this worked with all 4 pairs in different sections of the aviery, but as he told me all birds have different temperaments so if you go down this path as I'm about to we'll have to keep an eye on them. And talk about singing mine doesn't shut up.

I have a pair of Cubans in with a pair each of fire finches, gouldians, emblema, OB's, BFPF and quail.
They have been great, dashing about and building a great big nest, the cockbird has a couple of points in the aviary when he likes to stand and sing.

I would be a bit reluctant to mix RFPFs with Red Siskins for a couple of reasons. I have no doubt that the PFs would do well & breed OK but I just find them a bit greedy, messy & in the face of more timid birds and feel that they may have some negative impact on your prospects of breeding the Red Siskins well. Particularly when fresh greens, etc are offered the PFs would dive in & get the best of what's on offer & the Siskins may have to muscle in every time to get their share, which is not what you want if you wish to give them the best prospects of producing parent-reared young. Also Siskins like sunflower kernels and many other oilseeds which PFs are also partial to but would most likely make the PFs fat which will eventually stop their breeding output. For this reason I generally regard Siskins and PFs incompatable on dietary grounds alone. Your call, but I'd look at other options before this one.

Thanks for your input, i was thinking the same from what i've heard about PF's especially with all the food on offer.Tiaris wrote:I would be a bit reluctant to mix RFPFs with Red Siskins for a couple of reasons. They are a beautiful finch and if I was to get them i would most likely have to rotate them through the avairy so they were only ever housed on their own and not mixed with the siskins. But for now as you said I want to do wats best for the siskins so i'm most likely going to leave them on their own and see how they go. Might need a new avairy for a pair of RFPF's though ! lol

My very intention.superfinch wrote:Thanks for your lovely pictures Diane your not making my decision any easier because now I want them too!!! lol

They are a very active and happy little finch. Very brave too considering their size, or maybe they are just very nosey , they are always the first to check out anything new in the aviary. Probably would be a good teacher bird as an alternative to a canary.
Convinced yet?

Mind you, if you name any of the finches I currently keep I could probably convince you about those too!
