Deb . . Old age is that time of your life when your broad mind and your narrow waist swap places

Tintola . . The only part of your posts that I disagree with is in your maths.

Chance of getting a pair is 50% . . The first bird is what it is . . and there is a 50/50 chance of the 2nd one being the same or different

I am amazed that people can actually believe this tosh

Here's a story

One of these 'oracles' claimed to be able to not only sex people but also to tell how many kids they had

Dangled the 'thingo' over one bloke and came up with male (of course) . . and 2 kids

New wife . . obviously a believer . . "I've always told you that that last one wasn't yours!!!"

As reliable as a guess. As good as walking into a shop and having the owner tell you that they are 50% sure that it is a male.

Common amongst lovebirders I have seen people swear by the needle and thread test however I have also seen the same people get it totally wrong. Find a bird of a known sex, let them tell you how accurate this method is and then watch them get it wrong.

It was funny with one guy as he used this method to sex all his lovebirds but never bred any. :)

Testers can easily influence the result too i.e. make it move in a circle or straight line, that is why you don’t tell them the sex of the bird (if you already know) before they do their test…

I once saw where they tried this on pregnant mothers to determine the sex of the unborn babies and surprise surprise it wasn’t accurate in this regard either…

Are we to assume that they had 3 children, and did you leave that bit out????

Arthur, your maths is correct. I was looking at it from the point of view that they would either be: 2 males, 2 females or a pair, hence a 33.3% chance of getting a pair. Your reasoning appears to be the more accurate.

3 kids

On the maths . .

The 2 birds can be CC HH CH HC

So 2 of the 4 results are a pair

WHOA there , you're doin my head in! I see the maths but aren't a HC and a CH the same thing regardless of which one is on the right or left ? Which brings us back to 3 possibilities if you are looking for a pair. I do agree that the first bird "is what it is" and the second one is 50/50. OMG :?
OOPs the penny just dropped, So if you are right, then that makes me.....Ummm..... starts with a wr....No, can't say it!

I like to have an open mind aswell Deb,and be able to look outside the square. I myself use needling as another tool for sexing. And I relise that 90 % of people think its a load of rubbish 5% wont admit they believe its possible.Leaving me in the other 4% who dont discount it as a tool after utilizing all other tools except dna. And your old mate is in the last 1% who totally believe it .I also DNA birds using dna solutions, The maths using any dna lab or surgical sexing I believe is better odds, But still not 100% accurate 100% of the time, but the best by far, failing to have two monomorphic birds together breed.

P.S I also tried water divining last year on a property with no knowledge of where the water pipes were running.I managed to find all the pipes first up,which i cant explain either.Maybe I had 100% luck aswell  Oh well I am going to have some pretty bad luck soon to bring it back to 50/50.

Finally some one gets it . Yes yes yes for birds that I dont want to sell and that I am almost sure of the sex , the stringy thingy will be handy .
If selling or buying then of course 99% accuracy and a DNA test is mandatory .
Yay and sidekicks .... Thats all.
