Thinking of "popping up" to the STGF open day this year. Since it will mean a 4 day weekend, airfares (well, FF points anyway), accommodation car hire and .....
Who's been, what's it like, is it worth the effort & expense of is it of value only to those who live within Cooee?

Each year I attend the open day to assist and to be honest I still enjoy it.
The facility is world class,it is worth it just going there to see the area let alone the set up.
You will be put into a group, 5 groups of 25 people and you will be guided through each of the 4 sections and the 5th section is a mini lecture /discussion on the balcony describing what is being done and why with regard the gouldians. While I have never really counted how many I would guess there are over a 1000 gouldians kept and bred there. Also there is his large walk through aviary holding Non Australian Finches and some Softbills and his normal breeding section and prep area.
You will stop for lunch and that is when you get a chance to meet and talk with people from most areas of Aust. and generally some overseas guests
Most of what happens in this area is run by the members of the Hunter Finch Club and you get a real chance to meet up with them and make contacts.
The next day we generally drive to Cessnock and attend the Hunter Clubs bird sale which is generally very good.
I probably have missed something but to answer your question.
Is it worth attending ,yes it sure is.
