1 week ago i put a pair of zebra finches in a breeding cabinet,i have been feeding them seed and greens,i also have been putting some hay in there.Today i noticed that there breeding box was full of the hay. Is this the first sign of eggs on the way.
If so how long before the hen lays them.????
What other signs of breeding would the zebras show..

Harvey sounds like you might have eggs in a few days. You might see the male start to sing and dance to the female to see if she wants to be his mate. Look up u tube zebra courtship dance. Sometimes you might even see them mating.

Odds are that they are starting to go down to nest (After all they are Zebras) But Zebra's build a roosting nest to sleep in it could just be that.

Last night i put some bits of paper in the cabinet and this morning they where in the nest,i am trying not to get exited, as this will be my first eggs.

Dad said they are breeding becasue i have been looking after them properly.

Thats right, birds will breed if they are happy with their surroundings and food and water supply. So you must be doing a good job.
Now the time comes when you must be patient, its very tempting to look, but some birds dont like it at all. It wont take long and you should have some babies.
So if you can be patient for about a month.

They love, of all things, shreded white tissue to line the nest. Congratulations on getting it right.

Yes they have lined the nest with the tissue paper.
I read that if i keep putting nesting material in the cage they will fill the nesting box to the top,should i stop the nesting material now..

Once there is enough to pad the bottom on the nest well yes.

I would have to agree with buzz, zebs will build a roosting nest at times, nut just keep watching Harvey if the hen disappears for long periods during the day your got a good chance she's sitting on eggs, good luck your doing it right.

well done Harvey...sounds like you are doing a great job...hopefully by the middle of July you will start hearing the sounds of young chicks...another thing to look out for to be sure that the Hen is sitting on eggs is droppings that are much larger than normal...if you see that in the bottom of the cage/avairy then she is definately sitting on eggs...keep up the great work...regards, Paul
