Hey all,
Just got back from just over 3 weeks in San Fransisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Mexico. Saw some interesting, places, people and birds. Took a few pics so will attempt to upload them. Highlight? Seeing real live hummingbirds in the backyard of the house we rented in the Hollywood Hills and then having one come inside the house. Lowlight? Coming home to the cold! One funny thing is that the Aussie Finch influence seems to follow me everywhere. The screen saver on the television on board the Cruise Liner to Mexico was a trio of Gouldian Finches. Just felt like home--except for the tequila haze!

Wouldn't mind a screen saver like that myself, better to watch that than some of the rubbish that's on tv now.

Welcome back
Diane

Welcome back. I love the expression on the face of the Secretary Bird.
Interesting to see a Metallic or Glossy Starling overseas as they are from Qld and New Guinea.
Where were the pics taken?

Hi Tintola,

The metallic starlings are not uncommon in overseas zoo collections, not only in SE Asia but also in the US and Europe.

They are a popular softbill- but you already know that! :D

Thanks for the photos Matcho.

Looking at the focus on some of the photos it seems you had a smashing time!!!

So how were the Tequila slammers????

Myzo,
Ever tried to hold the tiniest little feather jewel in one hand and focus with a little sh.tpot camera? Not easy. Just had to take a couple of shots (no, not tequila) to prove it. Made the mistake of going to an original tequila brewery in Peurto Vallata. They gave samples, all 15 of them.Sheesh! Didn't know that tequila can range from dead set tasting like metho to like an angel p..sing down your throat.(Sorry for the description).

Tintola,
Photos of the flamingos, secretary bird and starling were at San Diego Zoo. Macaws and Toucan were taken in a wildlife park and dock at Peurto Vallata. Could have taken plenty more of birds, woodpeckers, cardinals, greeny and yellowy coloured finchy looking things plus heaps of buzzards, eagles, roadrunners and strange looking crows, magpies, blackbirds etc, etc etc. Did note though their starlings and sparrows look a bit different to ours, maybe the original pool here was shallow?

Buzz,
Be up that way over the weekend, will give you a call.

Good to be home, and yes, had a few surprises, new nests of yellow goulds but on the down side lost the vulture hen.
