what are java finchs like? they are ment to have a lovely song ..are they bullys or easy types? could a pair be kept with zebs/stars? or are they better on their own say 2 pairs. do they breed easly?
appoligies if I dont reply my computer is playing up
Javas well been along time since I've had them, tell you what I've been told. Javas can be bullies towards smaller passive finches have seen damage to bengos, I was recommend to buy a few pairs to let them pick a mate and give them budgie boxes to breed, they weren't the hardest to breed but found only 1 pair out of 3 went down. I was not very good at breeding them as some of my other finches. I hope that someone with better breeding results can help. Because of what I've been told I kept them on their own.
ok thanks, bengos in the big cage as well so will give javas their own cage and just get one pair to start with if I get them
I think anything that will hassle bengos will hassle stars and zebs ,dont want them upset as they all get on great and lots of pairs and even eggs .
Found their famous song on you tube and wasnt that impressed realy.my male star sings like carruso hes a real tallent, its made me want more singers hes a joy to listen to!!
If you want to try something different that will get along with stars and zebs you could try painteds, not much difference than the stars to accommodate or food except with live food, they have a unique call. Green singers have a nice song but never having any dint know how they go in a mixed collection. Best singer I've heard are canaries if you want to go down that track, easy to breed once you get the basics down easy to feed. But wait and see what else people reply about them, as I said that I wasn't that good with them and may have been lead down the wrong track with them.
Hi amalann i had them as a kid and found they bred very easily. Standard fair dry seed bit of greenfood and some sprouted seed. But to me they wer like breeding zebs or bengos they just went at it. I guess just pairing them up is the hard part. And yea they are bullies and will nest toss other species fledglings. Beautiful bird tho.
ok thanks, have arranged to buy a pair tommorow.I have a lovely pair of red painteds alredy,They are lovely birds i would get a yellow pair if I saw them they are very plasid and mr painted has a song when in the mood!!
I have been told the javas can go with budgies and was thinking of that but one of my budgies has month old chicks and is back in her box and so I will def not risk putting the javas in there if they are such horrors with chicks
Have seen javas with cut throats went ok by what I was told by the owner, never heard of them with budgies that's a new one. I hope they go good for you amalan.
Javas can usually be kept with budgies but I wouldn't do it whilst the budgies are nesting.
Make sure you provide lots of extra nest boxes when you do introduce the javas to minimise the risk of fights breaking out over nesting sites.
Good luck.
Javan Sparrows are hardy birds, to the same extent that Zebra Finches are. They have a beautiful voice, and are generally passive birds. However, there are a few Javans which can be aggressive, particularly to the smaller energetic birds (Like the Zebras), but generally they aren't too bed and able to get on well with most finches, particularly those just as passive, and non-finches, like Budgies and Cockatiels. However, given their size, I would recommend housing them in a large cage by themselves or in a decently sized aviary.
Also, like already mentioned, try to make sure that when you're keeping them with bigger birds, to put in places where each bird can fly/hide when need to, and extra breeding boxes are really a necessity.
