If rats havnt gotten to them then the chances they have been kicked out are pretty High, and if you have birds like quails that will probably eat them off the bottom if you can't find them there.
Just a thought.

Have you thought of geckos or small tree snakes, they are nocturnal hunters and hide in the dense brush or in very small spaces like between the roofing iron and walls during the day. My gouldian parents and other dominate birds, sometimes would throw out day old chicks and I only found them when a ant trail highlight the corpse.
Life in Port Macquarie is the ultimate Aussie sea change lifestyle.

Yeah with my painteds I've emptied a nest half way through breeding season and found 2 layers of nesting material with a egg and newly hatched young which was dried up, this has happened a few times.

some birds do not like fingers peeking in there little home....they abandon them pretty quick...and like DJB said build over the top or they toss them out...and start again...another reason is their diet for feeding young is not to their standard...same thing young abandoned....
