Is your finch sick or not well? Find out why.

Hi All,

We have a hospitalised hen OB, with signs of weakness, unable to fly well, tail flicking downward periodically, sitting mostly at bottom of cage etc., Was treated with paraffin oil and she passed part of a broken egg the next day. Although she is now sitting on perch occasionally, bird is still showing symptoms as described. I have a feeling she still has broken shell inside or possibly egg bound. Does anyone have any other suggestions for treatment please?

Many thanks,

Myself ... a vet visit for the bird . Not sure but something like infection (peritonitis perhaps) comes to mind .
Hope this has a happy ending ..poor little thing .
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

If there are broken pieces she may still pass them in good time however she is now at quite a risk of uterine inflammation/infection with the yolk thats leaked out. Certainly a vet visit is in order.
Re: paraffin oil for egg binding - placing something in the GI tract won't assist something in the urinogenital tract other than in the cloaca (where the two meet) just before it is passed out. You will get a minor lubricating benefit insert a drop directly into the cloaca.
