Noticed a house sparrow hanging around yesterday. Spotted it again this morning, then double take - bloody thing's in the aviary. After a closer look there's a pair of the buggers in the aviary! I have no idea how they got in. I found gap about 15mm by 20mm in some shade cloth lining the shelter but I can't see a sparrow getting through that. I haven't lost any finches so a complete mystery...
They're in a large planted aviary so I'll have to wait for them to find the seed trap. I recall someone was keeping house sparrows. So if they're wanted, they're free and if not they'll soon be free!

Here's one of the inmates...
I've just been up on the aviary roof and I can't find a hole anywhere near large enough. The mystery continues...You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

In ten years of living in inner city Sydney, I've never seen even one house sparrow. Not one. I have seen some way out on the urban fringe, in the outer suburbs.
Sparrows are still very common in Adelaide. When I go there, I do double takes at all the sparrows, which are omnipresent even in very built up and treeless areas.
There are a lot of theories going round for the sparrows' decline on the east coast, but one obvious one never gets mentioned: Indian mynahs. There are none in Adelaide.

I have a lot of sparrows visit my garden in Adelaide, probably due to the seed that gets scattered about, an unstoppable by product of keeping birds. We do however have some birds that look similar to Indian Mynahs though. Will have to see if I can get a pic of them.

Yep that's them (just back from googling pics
) Noisy Mynahs. Probably here for the Emu bushes, bottle brush trees and the flowers on the pomegranate bushes I would think.

The ones in the garden certainly don't have that fierce predatory look about them like the Indian Mynah

I have waves of the feathered freeloaders ...they get under the suspended and pull food through the wire . Poop all over the back verandah and can sniff out seed at 100 paces .
Was quite cute when there were just a few but now I get dozens at a time .
So please of anyone wants any TAKE MINE
