Hi All,

The huge gum tree in my neighbours back yard has a nest of Currawongs....i thought this was pretty special until this morning when they were on the avairy wire trying to attack my Gouldians....they must have young in the nest by now........they are fairly persistent....each time i would scare them away they would be back by the time i went inside...as I am at work during the day I would appreciate any suggestions to dealing with this problem...cheers, Paul

G'day Gouldianpaul, try a plastic owl from Mitre10 about $20 - they are very smart birds but the Plastic owl has worked keeping them away from my aviaries and chook house.
Good luck

Immediately throw some netting over the aviary as a deterrent while you sort out a permanent solution .
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

Hi Paul, as deb said bird netting is good idea, don't know if it will keep them out permanently double wire on aviery will hopefully stop them getting at your gouldians. The only way that I know how to stop them getting to wire would be making a frame that goes attaches to your aviery by about 1/2metre out and around it where your wire is then cover the frame with wire- sort of like a big airlock, this will take alot of time and money and will be permanent as I don't know your aviery this could be out of the question. Laserlite or polycarb over your wire will also stop them. Maybe some other people can have better ideas.

Thanks all for your help...I have put some netting across the fron to the avairy ...hopefully this deters them enough to look for another food source for their young.....I'm not too worried about them actually reaching my birds as i have used 1/4 inch wire....its just the fright they give them.....thanks again for your help

i also had trouble with little yellow/black coloured birds, landing on the wire, got my self a owl for 10 bucks filled it with sand and sat it on the aviary roof.... haven't seen them since, u can also buy owls that have swivel heads which would work well....

I've thought about the owl for other reasons but wasn't convinced it would work....I might give it a go.....it might get rid of those silly turtle doves that hang around looking for scraps from the dog's bowl...thanks Misso.

I get this female butcherbird that comes around everyone and a while. The birds just hide under all the bushes. I saw this thing on Bird Keeper Magazine, where they hang up CD's on string, they reckon it scares some birds away. I'm not sure, give it a try though! :)
