I lost my male Gouldian today.
Most beautiful bird I ever owned. The pretty ones always go first.
The first loss of y aviary collection. Plus then hen had four eggs under her, I don't suppose she'll rear them now.
Found him on the floor all fluffed, brought him inside under the heat, gave him some sugar water to try and perk him up a bit. worked for a little while, then he defecated... completely liquid and also completely black???????? I don't know what the hell was going on there.
Rang around, all that was suggested was a lot of antibiotics. He was dead by then.
Lost

So sorry for your loss Jayburd.
But some losses are inevitable, I suppose.
If it's any consolation, the fact that it died that quickly suggests that it's unlikely that any medication would have helped- it was already too late.
Just keep an eye on the rest of them to make sure it's a one-off.

Jay you want to know the dumbest thing! They are to me one of the easiast birds to breed besides painteds (excluding zebs a bengos). But yea sadly they can be a real pain. Some seem to be realy strong a live forever others just go downhill in no time.
When ive kept them tho in large cabinets, and outdoors, ive never ever lost a bird. Just in the big avairy i lose the odd one over winter.
Lucky you can usually breed enough to stay in front.

Thanks everyone...
yes he was a very special bird, the one I am most proud of in my collection.
Yes, I remember being told (and agreeing with) "when you have live stock you have dead stock". doesn't really help me much now though
