Omg I feel really lucky today! I remembered that years ago in the garden our mature tree died......found out by white ant years after when we had pest guy around..... Salvaged a tree stump for aviary from it too.... I had a thought of digging where the roots used to be and BINGO TERMITES!! :D Only people on here would appreciate this so thanks for reading ......so got chunks of dead wood with Termites and popped it in Aviary.....My Blue Cap was the first one to set his beady lil eyes on them and he wasted no time gobbling them up and then O/B lil girl (flaps gorgeous hen ) had a few but too late B/C had nearly the lot. :D Anyone else with Termites on property and feeds their birds any info would be great as Im new at this sort of food..just to be on the safe side might put bits of wood on plate with bit of water

Id be too scared the termites would start eating the aviaries . Guess this is where metal is a better material for aviary builds .

Parallel termite threads.

I use one one kind of mound, of a kind not known to eat houses or aviaries.
Lots of them eat leaf litter and other nonwood food; only a few eat houses (in the temperate zones).
I only take the outer mound, so they have no queen to start a new nest. She lives in the inner mound.

I also smear wool grease around the inside of the rim of the green garbage bin that they're kept in, which prevents both escapees and theft by ants.

Among other advantages, my wife will happily feed them out when I'm away working but she doesn't do maggots.
To date, I am not aware of any problem.
Have any termite feeders of longer experience ever heard of anyone having a problem like damage to their house or aviaries?

Have had them in my backyard in old tree stumps, put a piece of softwood untreated on top and collect them every morning, had them even come up through cracks in a concrete floor in my garage and devour a piece of wood that was a bit too close to the house for comfort!!!!! good way to collect them is to get a jar with two seperate clear tubes coming out of the lid, suck on one tube this creates suction on the other which will suck them into the jar.

Not sure what type of termites you have your way, but the ones in trees around here also like to eat houses. They can travel up to 50 metres underground from the nest to find a food source. Also when disturbed to much are likley to shut up shop and move.Hopefully your house is more then 50 metres from the nest or you may have visitors if they are not already visiting.Well thats what the termites in most of Victoria do anyway. If they sound like this type and are within 50 metres from the house do not disturb them anymore until you can get them identified and possibly professionally removed.

hopefully for you they only eat trees then you will have good finch food for a while.

When we bought the house we had a Termite inspection done, first week I found Termites in a tree stump in the backyard, timber in our roof is treated and no sign of them, the area I live in is notorious for them as soon as we get the first rains they go to wing and theres loads of them, but yes you are right and I'm carefull not to leave wood on the ground close to our house.
