If you are not sure I would suggest taking what you think it is to a plant nursery to confirm. Make sure that you know it has not been sprayed with a weed killer.

Chickweed is another favourite. Make sure it has the white flower only. DO NOT feed one that is similar with a red flower.

Well dad and i candelled the eggs a few days back and when we put them back in to the nest we cracked one egg dad was spewin as it was a fertile egg.
Today we checked the eggs and one of them seemed cracked as well it felt empty and light compared to the othere egg.So we just hope the last egg might hatch tomorrow if not chances are it a dud as well.......

If it doesn't hatch tomorrow, give it another day or two, just too be sure.

If it does hatch, leave the other egg in the nest so the hen won't sit too tight on the nest and may squash the chick, or the chick may sometimes come out of the nest with spread legs, when there is only one chick in a nest.

Bad luck about the fertile egg. I have done that a few times myself. Nothing worse when you see that it was fertile.

I now have 5 of my 9 hens with nests. No eggs yet, but expecting two hens to lay tomorrow and the others within a few days.

Sorry to hear that harvey that's one of the down side of handling eggs either candleing them or swap them with dummy eggs, bet dad will be more careful next time. A way that may help handle fragile eggs is to use a spoon to scoop them out and place them back. I don't candle my eggs anymore or swap with dummies I don't see any difference in nestling fatality. At the moment I have two nests with pinkies in them and another 4 not to far off hatching. If the 3rd egg is no good she will go down again fairly quick.

Yes dad said from now on we will not candell the eggs a just let nature take is course.
The last egg did seem heavey so it might have a chick in it..

On a better note i have 2 paires of Zebs on 10 eggs and a pair of Society finches on eggs......

Well that's great that the zebs and manikins are doing so well, only time will tell if the canary egg is any good, if not hatched in 5 days then I would say that's its no good .

Well i am exited, today i checked the nest and there is 1 little Canary baby in there.It looks good and healthy and nice and pink.
I can not take pics as the nest is fixed to the cabinet and i have to use a mirror to check the nest.
