Just noticed your location and you would have conditions ( heat / humidity) that most of us on the forum would not have deal with .Would be great if you could find a few locals and pick their brains. The high humidity must be a bit of a challenge.

Not really on the Softfood debate but the habit of keeping mealies in bran is not a clever idea.
Bran is the outer husk of wheat (der!!) but it also contain higher levels of phytic acid which can interfere with the uptake of calcium when consumed by your birds - I'm quoting a vet who I have a very high regards for might I hasten to add!!
Wheatgerm is the best medium being as far from bran (husks) as possible but we use pollard and I know of others using mill-run................anyway just in case there's someone out there in finch land blissfully unaware of the "perils of Bran" and calcium uptake!!

I got some wheatgerm yesterday and will give that a go-I knew about the calcium uptake problem with bran and supplement accordingly. Most locals feed with mealies and (termites-which are getting very hard to get)- I like the suggestion about the big container wih no lid. The tropics are very difficult-everything goes mouldy irrespective of how you keep it. I got madiera cake locally and its a big hit.

Thanks

Kenny
