The other day, my friend came over. She is African, so she has dark skin.
Anyway, she came into the house, and I pulled out Franklin (our princess parrot) from his cage. He freaked out, and refused to go near my friend. He wouldn't even stay in the same room as her! We figured it was because of her dark skin, because Franklin had never seen a dark skinned person before!
It just prooves that birds know a different person when they see one!
Parrots aren't dumb! They realise stuff....

Theres something about these princess parrots . I pulled 2 out yesterday for hand rearing and today they are cuddly and chirpy ...big difference to Quarrion .
The parents of these 2 always meet me at the front perch to eat greens from my hands , not today instead they just glared at me as if Ive lost their trust .
Perhaps the skin colour has the bird a little shy , it is something new and different for the bird . Im sure in time the bird would come around .
Anyway nice observation on bird behaviour .

to blow your mind on bird intelligence and behaviour, read "alex and me" by dr irene pepperberg. she trained an african grey parrot for over 25 years. extraordinary revelations, including the fact that they understand concepts of colour and size, and numbers including zero (something that took humans quite a while to get their heads around). a great read for any bird fan.
ps. please don't discount the fact that rather than your friend's skin colour, she may have been nervous, scared or giving off some other vibe your bird didn't like.

Bob my Quarrion has always had a bit of an attitude however he has always tolerated people attention without any aggression .
My son has this friend , one of many that would frequent the house but this one friend would walk in and Bob would begin aerial attacks on Joshs (friend) head .
At first I thought it funny to see Josh go white with fear but then it wasn't funny when I saw the anger in this little bird , he hated Josh .
Any one else could come and go and Bob would happily just ignore them and go about being Bob .
To my knowledge Josh had never teased Bob , the only difference between him and my son was Josh was taller . Both wore back to front babseball caps , had jeans that they wore down around their knees and both at that age were normal goofy teenagers .
Bob just didn't like him and didn't want him in the house .....that was that .

Oh Franklin did settle down around my friend, he was even happy to sit on her shoulder for a bit. I've always found Princess to be little angels compared to others, they are so sweet! And talkative!
Franklin loves my mum and me, hates my 3rd sister, even though he was her bird, and he 'puts up with' my other two younger sisters. He hates my other 'white' friend, for some reason, and he loves my cousin, as well as her cousin, which he had only met once, and for a minute or two! It is interesting how their minds work!

lol Princess Parrots sweet.....umm you need to meet mine, he's the only one of all my birds that has to be kept seperate when they are all out for a flight, he continually harasses the cockatiels and even tries it on the galah, only bird he can be loose with is the Lori who he shares a cage with....nasty little bastard.
