Self Bengalese

Hi,

I am a new member and wanted to see how many people out there are keeping/breeding the Self Bengalese. I have been keeping finches since I was a wee tacker but recently I have become quite passionate about these guys. I have found very few people that actively keep the Selfs in Australia and I was hoping to get an idea of some of the colours/mutations that people have at present.

But the Blog at the bottom does work. Welcome to the forum. No selfs among mine. All varying degrees of pied. I particularly like the Chestnut and am trying to breed up this colour at the moment. Also dilute fawns.

I have had a rather rare mutation. I actually have had 4 born this year (3 in the same clutch) I breed albino bengalese finches. I see you are from the UK, is this correct? The black brown "Euro Self" is quite impressive, we do not have the Euro Self in Australia and it is extremely hard to find breeders that keep Self Bengalese at all, let alone any mutations. Chocolate is the most common of course, then Fawn and then Chestnut. From my digging around I do not believe that the Grey Mutation (no red/brown pigment) of the Bengalese has ever been developed in the Selfs here in Australia or even the pied birds for that matter. Others out there may have a different opinion. I am a big fan of the Euro Fawn or Red/Brown, quite a striking bright coloured Bengo!

I have recently had a pair of Dark Eyed White Self Bengalese and because of my limited space they are currently with a friend to try and develop the strain. I have not seen an Albino before.

Self Black/Browns, Self Red/Browns. Both beautiful birds. The well defined belly markings are another trait I hope to put some time and effort into strengthening in my birds as I find it very attractive.
