What am I doing wrong? My star finches haven't started to show signs of mating. Well once in a while the male will give his mate a kiss in the beak, give her food, sleep next to her cuddle, but other than that nothing my societies already have babies and they are barely 7 months old and raising them fine. The only sign they show is that they go into the 3 left over nest boxes and it looks like if they were interested , but as soon as I turn around they are in another nest box. At the beginning when I had 2 males and 1 female the red head would mate with her and protect her from the other star finch, but as soon as we separate the male they stop building nests and mating and the mating rituals. What went wrong?

mate u have to remember that not all finches will breed at the same time. have you given them enough nesting material . out of all the stars i had over the years, they liked to build there own nest but a few liked the cane baskets and they used allot of grass in the proccess. also with society and zebra finches they can breed like flies and can breed at a real early age of about 3 months but most other finches 9 to 12 months you could always try a few more nests of types they might not like what they have or they are not ready yet. so dont panic they will breed when they are ready fingers crossed ...pete

the word patience comes to mind Reg, you may need to find a bit more of it with some species :)

Will power and patience should be bottled and sold ....I find with anything Im breeding the trick is to not look .... leave them alone and let nature take its course . When ya least expect it wham it will happen .
