Hi
i have 5 young gouldians that have fledged and are now 4 weeks out of the nest ,
the parents have gone straight back to nest and have 5 eggs, due to hatch in about a week.
of a night time the young are going back in the nest with the Hen.

im worried they will smother the young when they hatch.

How old do they have to be before you wean them out of the cage with the parents. They are feeding by themselves but still bludging a feed off their parents occasionally.

Hi Speedy,

So im guessing your Pair and Fledgings are in a breeding cage??

A good indication that they are eating on their own is the nodels around the mouth are gone, or if your still worried you can put a wire devider in the cage and let the dad feed the fledgies through the wire. im suprised the parents are'nt kicking the fledgies out of the nest, are the eggs fertile???

good luck with the next clutch

Jarryd :)

I remove young birds from the aviary 4 weeks after they fledged, figure that at that age they can cope on their own.
if only it were so easy with my own kids, feel like al bundy from married with kids at times

The young ones should be ok to remove now. Fledglings can be a pain in backside sometimes. Generally the parents will evict them by the time the eggs hatch but the damage may already have been done. Quite often they will damage the eggs and very few will hatch in the first place. This happens to me quite regularly also and I find myself with good first clutches of 5's & 6's then the second clutch may only be 1 or 2 hatchlings.
