Diane the little black seeds that your finding leftover are rape seed. my birds wont eat it when it is mixed with the normal dry seed but I make it available in a seperate container and the birds then eat it, especially during winter. I do the same with linseed.

Hi gomer, thanks for the reply, i can find the small packs of Virkon S on Ebay and on Birds R Us, but not any bigger, where did you get the 1 kg from???gomer wrote:i buy it a kilo at a time for around $100 of virkon-s.I sprout it exactly the same as mike.i do 5kgs at a time and use two plastic buckets one in the other with holes drilled in the inner bucket. You can also use virkon-s in their water to keep it clean.
You can also use avicleans to sprout. That is what i used to use.

Dont know if you need to buy any additives for the water if your only doing small batches at a time , trick is to smell the sprouts b4 you feed them , you can tell if they are a bit sus by the smell.
If your doing big batches then you will need to buy the additives.

would apple cider vinegar work just as well? Saw it mentioned on another topic about it keeping the bacteria down.

i would stick to the virkon s and avi clens . apple cider only good in the water dish to change acidity to help get rid of megabacteria. better to be safe than sorry when it comes to sprouted seed it can go off and ferment pretty quick....pete
