Hey so Im reading my old Everybird book and of course noticed a piece on euthanising and it said to use cotton wool and ether or chlorform ....is it still available ?
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

I got a big bottle of ether from a chemist about five years ago for use as a solvent.
(Who said we don't get up to much out in the sticks?)
It was cheap and didn't require any sort of license.

I prefer atlanto-occiptal dislocation aka the old thumb and forefinger trick for euthanasia (of birds, that is).
Avid amateur aviculturalist; I keep mostly australian and foreign finches.

I think it's a variation on the theme of atlanto-occipital dislocation. This is widely held to be the swiftest mode of death, which is effectively instantaneous.

I hold the bird firmly in hand, with my thumb on its throat and my forefinger behind the head, and the other fingers around the body. I push my thumb in and break the neck over it by pushing the head forward. Where finches are involved, it does not require great force.

When I catch live mice, I usually decapitate them. Much kinder and swifter than conscious drowning. :mouse: :eh: :petrified:

As for cats, my favoured method is an intracat injection of a substantial barbiturate overdose. This of course requires one first to catch the cat, which is sometimes the hard bit, and is not a method available to everyone because of the difficulty in obtaining barbiturates without professional assistance. :kitty: + = :shh: ;-)

Sharp scissors / kitchen scissors do the trick, but if I'm feeling squeemish a husband comes in handy. For bigger birds I still use good ol Chloroform. I think some use helium or CO2 in a gas chamber too. Quicker as I've heard tell.

ENOUGH again! Scissors??? What? Stab it to death or cut the head off?

Personally I like to tape them to a light coloured wall and throw rusty darts! Not as affective with cats though!

How do you decapitate a live mouse without it biting you? :?
