Hello All,

Being a young whippersnapper of 36 I have little to no knowledge of Australia's history in regards to foreign finch importation. At what point were our foreign species being readily imported (from what date) and when did it stop? As you can imagine I am a bit interested in the history of the humble Bengalese finch in Australia but also equally interested in gaining some perspective into how some of our other Aviary birds came into the country and why it stopped.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers

Some excellent info on the banning of trapping in Australia and when foreign imports were banned, but I cannot see much information discussing early foreign finch importations and when particular species originally came into the country.

Thanks for your help.

It may have been a bit of a free for all way back when .....
Merchant sailors could make a few extra dollars by bringing in birds etc and it was common knowledge there would be birds for sale at this port or another .

There are some general figures on birds released from 1827 to 1872 available in the March 2011 newsletter.

1945 was the last legal importing of foreign finches I doo's believe .......like Deb said the sailors used to bring boxes of them up the Derwent river to trade for budgies I'm told..........
