Hi guys,

Can anyone recommend based on their own personal experience a good aviary supplier?

I have looked at Les Turner, Col Western and Steel chief and prices vary quite a bit.

Was wondering if anyone had experience with these suppliers or knows of a different one that can deliver a quality product at a reasonable price?

I was thinking of building a timber one but thought better after some advice from a mate.

Thanks

Hi,

I haven't used him myself but I have heard lots of good things about D and S Aviaries ... http://www.dandsaviarys.com.au/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
He attends the Orange Bird Sale and always has a truck load of aviaries to deliver.

From QLD but do alot of prefab and delivery in NSW.

I second Ray's suggestion about D& S Aviaries.
Dave Hackney ( owner/proprietor) is a birdkeeper himself so knows most of the requirements for the particular birds you want to keep. He is also very honest and does a good job.
If you google D & S Aviaries you can see a range of what he builds. They are all of welded galv steel construction and colourbond and he can make aviaries in any style you wish and in whatever gauge wire you wish from 6mm ( 1/4 inch) to cockatoo size and will build safety walkways to suit your aviary. If you give him a call he can help you out. Worth getting a quote anyway.

I am not a big fan of the sliding doors used by some manufacturers because the channel in which the sliding door moves on the bottom of the cage usually fills up with seed/dirt and needs regular cleaning.

Hi,
I have had some exceptionally good experiences with Les Turner Aviaries. They are not the cheapest but the Aviaries are of very high quality and Les does know his stuff. My Avairies and couple of other I know less has built and suppleid are on the coast with no rust after some years of use. Quality.

You get what you pay for

Thanks guys,

I have been to Les Turners complex and yes he is almost double the cost of most but I also trust his workmanship.

It seems I have a tough choice to make.

Hi,

I looked at pre fab aviaries in Sydney last year. I agree Les Turner is great but too pricey for me so I got mine from Precision Aviaries at Smithfield. Very happy with the aviary.

Please don't use D & S Aviaries.

I asked them to build a cage to my specifications. This was ignored and built as cheaply as possible. David wouldn't entertain making the changes after the cage was found to be useless for our needs.

The materials and workmanship were also very low.

As all was a "Gentleman's agreement" and not in writing,I couldn't hold them to what was discussed.

Please be warned.

I have used Col Western and one of my current aviaries is from there and when i asked for certain custom things to be done, it was no problems at all. Very good build and 2 of us put it together in no time at all. The only thing i change is use Tek screws instead of rivets and self tappers that come with the kit.

Elf77,

Why not try and build it yourself? Make your plans, what you want, surely you have a friend or a rello involved in carpentry/building. I did it with my nephew. Took a bit of time. First step was to mark out the area, next step pour the concrete base. After that it is in your hand as to what you want. Took me about a month, just working weekends. I would buy the timber, laserlite, wire during the week, frames were made then I would wire them. Have a 2.7m long, 2m wide and 1.8 high divided into 3 with doors so it can be either 3 separate areas or one or two. Entry is through the shed which has all the usual stuff, lawnmowers, power tools etc, etc and all seed, mealie farm and whatever I need in regards to nesting materials etc and heaps of fishing gear, pretty compact. I very rarely have to enter unless there is a real crisis because all feeding is done through wire spinners daily with sprouted seed, water, greens and live food. Seed hoppers are monitored and hooked out and refilled from outside when needed. All painted colourbond green with green wire . Looks good to me and is doing the trick.

All up about $600 plus sweat, but it is mine, I built it. Compared to the little tiny piss fart colourbond aluminium cage my missus bought me to get me started again after 30 years, not even a third of the size and cost near as much. No safety doors, no nothing. Must admit though the trade off was a granny flat where the old shed and avairy was. 15k.

Still think I am a winner, she's gone. Just me and the birds.

Ken.
