OOOPS,Ive openned a can of worms here,I've been breeding birds for over 40 years and in the early days, every one bred thier own live food, meal worms and blowfly maggots (peww) and termites. We didnt have places that we could go and buy livefood so i have continued to breed my own, that is bush flymaggots and mealworms,i don't feed termites anymore and havent done for many years.I have recently disposed of over 100 birds and specialise in two species, lessers and white bellied crimsoms. My lessers wont eat mealworms for some strange reason but thrive on bush fly maggots,The WBs eat both. I guess what i am saying is lifes getting faster and i am a long way behind.Aviculture has come a long way with commercial additives, medications and the commercial suppliers of livefoods which in turn, why would breeders want to breed their own. Cheers Craig ps i appoligise if i have upset anyone

My lessers wont eat mealworms either, but they like the little brown fast ones and love termites. I reckon aviculture has gone slightly backwards with all the commercial additives, medications and commercial suppliers. If your still breeding the birds you specialise in why apologise ? just send me a pair of WB`s and all is forgivencrocnshas wrote:.We didnt have places that we could go and buy livefood so i have continued to breed my own, that is bush flymaggots and mealworms,i don't feed termites anymore and havent done for many years.I have recently disposed of over 100 birds and specialise in two species, lessers and white bellied crimsoms. My lessers wont eat mealworms for some strange reason but thrive on bush fly maggots,The WBs eat both. I think I should point out Crocnshas is regarded as the person who introduced the masses to BushFly Maggots and made and sent out numerous
flyboxes. Possibly the best inovation in the last 50 years.
Prior to that, Sheeps Heads,Lungs,Hearts, Road Kills and many other items were hung up to go off and be blown by Blow Flies,
then cleaned through bran and so on.To those that haven't had to do that thank you little Bush Fly colony and Craig.

I know it happens regularly but I'm very surprised that any commercial suppliers can't breed enough mealworms, especially at this time of year. I've had to significantly slow down my mealworm breeding as they are thriving in this warm & humid weather.

I don't know much about Pisces production schedule but their shortage may be due to a staff shortage. They were advertising for a technician a couple of weeks ago so perhaps they had an unexpected staff loss rather than unprecedented demand and there is at least a month's lag if their schedule/colonies got out of synch.
