Hi Guys,

Just saw a add for Frilled canaries and Rollers, when I asked how much for a single male roller the guy texted back $50 for a older male and $25 for a younger male.....
I replied with "No sorry The most I have ever paid for a Rollers is $60 and that was a pair"
He responded back with ok well when you come and see the birds ill cut you a good deal

I'm just curious as in how much would a pair of Frill style canaries go for... a decent pair?.... (that way I know what im dealing with when I go to see his birds)

And am I being rude by asking for a better deal If I'm buying a roller pair and a frill pair of this guy? The add did say that his trying to get rid of all his birds because he would like to get into finches
I plan on getting another Roller pair of this guy either way but for the right price....

Just thought Id ask you all for advice

There is no law to say that you can't ask for a cheaper price but just becareful.
As for price well thats up to the seller if they want to put a higher price than someone else that is there right and respect that.
I must admit when some one wants to buy a bird from me and uses the line "Oh I got one cheaper from ..." I simply say fine go and see them again"
There are also other factors, what time of the year, the area it comes from, its rarity, females can be more expensive than males and the important one is its quality.I guess alot depends on supply and demand.
A well bred bird should always bring a better price.
If you need the bird and its of good quality buy it, don't scratch around in hope of getting another a few $'s cheaper.

Please I hope you don't think that I wouldn't go into someone's house or place of business and ask for a cheaper price on a single or pair of birds, I would only ever ask for a better price if I was buying a large amount of birds of them....and even then I'd be too worried to ask or not
I agree 110% with you on if someone said to me well I brought X bird for X amount and Id say the same thing as you mentioned above ..... (I hope I didn't upset you).
Now that I have re-read what I originally wrote I realize I do sound like a bit of a "tight arse" so to say lol and that's not the case, I was just looking for some advice on how to talk with breeders so I don't sound like a clown or to get taken advantage off... (im only new to this and want to do things right by everyone when meeting people) actually, maybe thats what I should of wrote in my above topic

So in saying all this I went to see the roller and Frill breeder yesterday and just acted myself and listened to what he said, I was honest and hoped he was honest with me...
I scored another pair of rollers with a little red factor in them and also a AWESOME Persian Frill male I paid the right price and even got a better deal as the breeder knew I was new to the game... someone helped him when starting off so in turn he did the same for me (his words)

Rocco having dealt with alot of Canary breeders in the past I can understand how prices can fluctuate from breeder to breeder but as e orix has stated sometimes you need to pay the price to get that right bird. I Have been breeding canaries for a long time and knowing that cheaper isn't always better. I once paid a good $50 for a yorkie and everyone else at the time was selling them for $40 but I paid the price and he was an awsome cock and had many young that turned out great. I hope that you and this guy get along great as he maybe able to help you find just what you want and sounds to me that he maybe an honest breeder. As for persain frills just like finch breeder never seen them but in pictures and was told that they are a bit harder to breed by needing clipping around the vents of both to allow good mating.

Cheers Danny

I only have the male Frill at the moment, im in no rush to get a hen as yet. I would just like to find the right bird and wont mind paying
The breeder was honest and I will be talking to him again, along with all the other breeders I have already spoken too and come across in the future
Like yourself I to brought my first bird a Gloster for $65 and like you everyone around me was selling for $45 $55... I just knew he was a good bird and when I got him home he started singing like it was someone flipping on a switch lol I later on bred him with my uncles Gloster female and so far have not received him back after 2years as he breeds and sings so well
