they are off the floor but slugs have the ability to climb up vertical surfaces including wire.

Salt looks like the way to go.

Salt or white vinegar are the best deterrents I've found. They like to use the same slime path each time so put a little pile of salt or puddle of vinegar in their favorite entry points or paths.
An old post but good one. I have a PVC pipe buried app. 300 mm in to the ground and app 1 m above the ground on which I have the seed dish. Last year I noticed slugs or snail slime all over the seed. I got some salt in a small container dissolved with little bit of hot water then added a cup of brown (any) vinegar (brown is the cheapest). I brushed it all over the PVC pipe and it's been nearly 12 months and I still haven't seen a snail or a slug slime on the seeds. I wouldn't pour salt onto the ground, it poisons the soil, nothing will ever grow around it. To kill a snail or a slug spray some vinegar on top of them.

I have no worries pouring salt as I have gravel and grow plants in pots in aviaries , a planted aviary you could probably put a kitty litter tray in , layer it with salt wnd then put a smaller feeder inside that ....
