Does anyone else have this issue?

At night I find my seed trays filled with slugs.

Is this harmful for the birds?

If so how can I prevent them swimming through the seed?

Thanks

Salt is a barrier for slugs, dont know about any effect on the birds though.

I have a slug problem here too. My aviaries are mouse-proof but not slug-proof unfortunately. They still find their way to raised feeding shelves during the night. Salt or white vinegar are the best deterrents I've found. They like to use the same slime path each time so put a little pile of salt or puddle of vinegar in their favourite entry points or paths.

You could also make a local pub for the slugs outside the aviary, I believe they are partial to beer, a vegemite jar lid or similar of beer set up outside the aviary and in the morning you will be able to collect the inebriated slugs.

Knew a chap that squashed snails for his Red siskins and asked my parasitology lecturer at the time whether they are the intermediate hosts for any finch-type parasites....answer was No so at least thats one issue with them NOT to cause u grief!!!
Guess a slug is just a shell-less snail after all!!!

Used to take slugs & snails to a mainland chap for his bigger softbills and they apparently did them no harm.....

Some of the bigger parrots partook in a little salt , still alive and well . Did notice water consumption a bit higher at first but salt is one of theose things that short term will only make you thirsty and then its flushed out of the system ...

My birds have salt licks anyway which they nibble at so no real difference me thinks.

Years ago a common supplement for finches to pick at was rock salt, so I don't think it will hurt them.

Metallic copper repels snails and slugs. They will not crawl across it. A narrow strip in an appropriate place will stop them cold. Don't believe me? Read this http://www.sciencebuddies.org/science-f ... p019.shtml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
