I hate to say this Tony but out of the malanistic birds i have had,all moulted out to normal looking birds within two years and i think colouredfeathers and Mr Tino will back me up.Some of the birds i had were nearly totally black bodied with metalic blue chests and moulted out normal.I think it is a lack of vitamin D,lack of direct sunshine,i've seen it in red stawberrys too but i could be wrong thats my opinion. Tony me and tino we have had a number of birds like yours but what craig said is 100% right.

Though I have never seen a melanistic bird "in the feather" I would have bought this bird too. And I would try breeding him back to a daughter when the time comes. Because though you may get nothing but normals, this is the only way to find out.

Absolutely right unfortunately for me. Finnished his moulting and looks nearly like a normal but still has a slight melanistic look to him around the chest area (colour).
