Left Colac for the Geelong sale this morn got to the Belmont turn off and bang gear lever would not select gears nothing :x lucky it was stuck in 1st so i could move it, had to get family member to come and get me with a car trailer. But i called into the Belmont pet shop while i was waiting and bought 3 stars and a very different looking Gouldian. It is a black headed male very motley looking green back chest is a violet/blue looking very strange. I was not going to by anything bar the stars but when i saw it i decided to by the gould, if i was smart enough i would take a photo and put it on here but no idea how :?

I missed it as well :( My dog was neutered earlier this week, and a stitch tore, hence an emergency run to the vet just before we were set to go to the sale!

He is definitely melanistic. Either a Yellow-billed BH or a YH with most severe melanism on the head.

If he is in an outdoor aviary this year , the next moult will bring him back to normal...he may not loose 100% of the melanistic look , but it will dispear...pete

I hate to say this Tony but out of the malanistic birds i have had,all moulted out to normal looking birds within two years and i think colouredfeathers and Mr Tino will back me up.Some of the birds i had were nearly totally black bodied with metalic blue chests and moulted out normal.I think it is a lack of vitamin D,lack of direct sunshine,i've seen it in red stawberrys too but i could be wrong thats my opinion. He is in a outdoor aviary with over birds .I had no idea what type he was but decided to buy him because he looked so different to my birds or any i had seen. If i breed from him will his offspring be similar or normals ?

Tony they would more than likely normal looking but if it is malanistic, which i doubt, the young could be split for it and you wouldn't be able to tell till you bred back to the father, one of his daughters. Craig
