Peales parrotfinch? Not sure.

Jay I think you're stirring the pot! Even if you can find a record of a single export of Peales export I would argue that their numbers remain low because they are difficult to breed not because they are all exported. With a domestic price of $3000/pr (according to Birdcare.com) there's not much incentive to export anyway.

Red-crested Cardinal went from rare to critical status due to untimely exporting. The exporting of Peales PF, Dybowski Twinspots and Green Strawberry Finches no doubt added to their current perilous status when they were sent out whilst rare and declining.

Could it be the website is referring the birds as from Australia meaning that is where they originate from not that they are being flown over by jet!
Could be just a way of selling them by giving them an "exotic edge"

Tiaris is right,my green stawberrys went to a certian person in Qld and were sent oversea's,been kicking myself ever since. Craig

There you go. It would be interesting to know the premium price they would get exporting them rather than selling these rare birds domestically.

Its disappointing to hear that birds get exported overseas especially the rarer ones. Shame the all mighty dollar wins every time and we lose potential breeding birds.

Pity we could not do a swap, if exporting is allowed. Swap something we have lots of for something we have few of but they have lots of.

Well I stand corrected however if the export from a single source endangers the viability of a the national captive population it was already at perilous levels. Stopping someone exporting a foreign bird comes down to restricting that person's freedom to conduct business within the law. The only way to prevent this this would be to either have a blanket ban or subject all aviculturists to strict government regulation/monitoring of everyone's birds to ensure that critical numbers are maintained in the domestic market or we could allow imports!
