Well went to my local bird dealer today to buy some seed, went through the avieries as you do to see what they have and if anything stands out. Went past a cage full of Cubans which i was stoaked to see they had about 20, males and females. Asked if they would like to swap a cock for one of my young so I could pair it up with the sister. I was told that the birds are due to be sent over to America early next week so it wouldn't be right to send such a young bird, well they would probably know best. I couldn't even purchase a pair. I would like to know how well do they travel going so far and what kind of price do they get as normal sale price is at $90 pp. I personally would love to have brought a pair as they we all in stunning condition and if they knocked back a sale my guess is they are definitely getting a good $$$.

Well Danny I was interested to follow up on the partners of your local Melton aviary and dutifully went to that nameless website and and followed the link to their overseas partner and found that there is either something odd. Either there is no truth in advertising legislation in the USA or there's a lack of enforcement or there some illegal export from Australia happening!

Well can't say if anything funny going on, but if that's the round about price for a Cuban no wonder why they wouldn't like to sell, probably getting +$100pp. I don't don't get involved in those aspect as they seem to just go over my head due to not knowing the rules and regulations of exporting. I did many years ago have a bloke from a shop come and buy all my young canaries 81 in total for that year and then for the next few years after and told me that he shipped them overseas to America also but on the fourth year he was no longer in business. How do they ship them off our shores to America without alot of birds dying? I thought that the stress alone would knock them around.

If this is Claude Borg I asked him about transport losses a few years ago when I was trying to get some Philippine importers to bring in some birds from him. Anyway he claimed that losses were negligible and I believe him. Air transport of finches isn't like the live shipping of sheep and cattle. I know there are others on the forum that are totally against exports and I agree for the rarer species here but I don't think the export market sets the price for our domestic sales.
This is interesting, GregH. Here is some information about that company:

No Greg the bloke isn't Claude. The people are in werribee a small shed like structure. The previous bloke used to be in deer park but no longer. I'm was just interested in how they were shipping the birds as I thought that the ling flight would be not so good for the birds and like I said I don't have any real knowledge in this area. Well it couldn't be that bad as alot of birds all around the world get shipped almost everywhere. Thanks Greg .

Can you name any species that have been in Australia that have disappeared/no longer available due to export?roma9009 wrote:and this is why birds become extremely rare or nonexistant in this country as they can export foreign finches but won't even import just a few birds so we get something different and a challenge
