My wife buys these all the time to sprinkle on food particularly breakfast cereal. Occasionally she thinks she sees a grub in the container so gives them to me to mix in the bird seed. They seem to disappear so hopefully the birds are getting the benefit they are renowned for. I do know they are grown as garden plants because they are sold at Bunnings here on the Gold Coast and have blue flowers I seem to recall. I contemplated getting a few plants to see if the flower heads would be of interest like the sunflower heads but never got around to it.....ce la vie.....

I have a teaspoon of Chia seed everyday on my cereal. Apparently they contain more plant based Omega 3 & dietary fibre than any other food from nature.
There's a company over here in WA that grow it up in the Kimberleys (
www.thechiaco.com.au). Perhaps you could contact them and source some information regarding it's use for birds? I'm quite sure it wouldn't do them any harm but probably wouldn't hurt to ask and double check. Is quite expensive though. Hope this helps.
Cheers

Henry blue maw seed is poppy seed, fantastic as a seed added to softfood. My birds just don't seem to eat very much by itself.

Thats right Danny, maw seed is a favourite seed for canarys and breeders have have used it for many years,it is/was used in egg and biscuit to tempt the birds to eat the soft food and can't be given straight as it is addictive and causes the birds to behave like they are drunk so a little bit goes along way, like a teaspoon to a kilo of E & B is more than enough.
