BIGFAIRY wrote:Hi guys, just finishing building my bird aviary its quite big (1.5 meters square) i have a pair of tri colored nuns,a pair of purple chested gouldings and 1 white chest goulding( female flew out while transferring aviaries, planing on getting another) i also had what i thought were all male zebras but one started building a nest and would attack all the other birds so have moved then out of aviary into a different cage till they are sexed.
basically i was told most finches can be house together and there should be next to no fighting. not really interested in breeding( if it happens then it happens) mainly i love the sound of look off them.
i don't want to get a pair and them fight with the rest and/or get bullied.
so my question is what breeds can be house safely together in pairs or groups??
thanks guys

I keep gouldians and zebras together
They get along great
But the gouldians take all the nests, so the zebs have nests with smaller doorways so the Goulds can't get in

More like the Zebs being more aggressive nest protectors they keep goulds away.... And after a while you will find Zebs will over run the aviary...

Wrong...the goulds took over the aviary
Only started with 1 pair of goulds and 50 pairs of zebs
Goulds took a zeb nest....chucked out the zebs
Now the goulds rule the aviary
Zebs are no match for my gouldian colony

Werty yours may be the exception to the rule...but there are a lot of novices on here and I can assure them this is not the case...Gouldians only breed for short period of the year whereas Zebs breed most of the year...So going by my 40 plus years of experience and the fact that they do rule the roost I stand by my statment

After the first pair of gouldians took over the aviary I thought it was just a fluke...maybe even just an extra agressive pair of gouldians
But now I have a small flock of gouldians purchased from 3 different breeders
The gouldians in my aviary rule the roost
They tolerate the zebras ok....but when it comes to nests ...the Goulds wont give the poor zebs a chance at having a nest
So now I had to custom make the zebras nests with special extra small entrances so the goulds leave them be
My gouldians definitely rule the aviary

Just wait till the Gouldians breeding season is over... Zebs will outnumber them very quickly.

I have Goulds and Zebs together also. Both are the dominant birds in some situations. e.g. different avairys. Depends on the individual birds, but Zebs win more often than Goulds.

Not a chance
Once the breeding season is over for the Goulds all nests are pulled out
The whole avairy gets a 6 month break from breeding
