Sorry to hear that . Nature has a funny way of working things out. I guess that is where survival of the fittest comes in. Hope the other chick does well.
Not good ..dunno if its just me and maybe im lucky but so far ive just stuffed erm back into the nest box and theyve been fine...not saying im rite but maybe im just lucky so far. Always been the last chick that jumps ship also with mine.
Rock and a hard place I reckon with that one. Wouldnt stay in the nest, tried loads of times. Parents calling to it, youngster calling back, thought Id cracked when I saw the hen feeding it while it was in the barrel.
Note to self......Maybe I should find a deep, but big container that a light/heat can be hung over so that underdone fledglings can be out of the nest but not so mobile that they can get chilled on the floor. Container would need to be open enough to make the parents feel comfortable going into it to feed the youngster.
Diane The difference between Genius and Stupidity is, Genius has it’s limits
i've heard (and noticed) that a bit of brush placed in a corner on the floor that a young finch can clamber up at night reduces losses of undercooked birds quite a bit... still have to occasional loss if someone fledges drastically early, but have definately lost less when they can find a warm corner up off the cold floor. sometimes it just cant be helped sometimes though. did all you could.
