It would certainly be something worth trying .

With a bit of luck this search for Sustainability wont come up with a Carbon Tax as the solution :P

As I understand it, the original SAN programme has been dropped for a very downsized version. I know that Matt Russell put an enormous amount of effort and thought into the SAN. I'm sure Matt and those involved in the programme found it very dissappointing that the take up by aviculturists was so low. The new SAN programme, instead of covering all species, will only cover 4 chosen species; Aurora finch, Black throated finch, Hooded parrots and Masked doves.
I believe the original SAN had the right intentions, but I guess the thought of paperwork and the privacy issue put a lot of people off. I saw this personnaly when the SAN project was presented at the UBSSA seminar in 2010. There was some concern (incorrectly in my opinion) about these issues from the crowd. The people next to me said they would not participate because of the privacy issue. Unfortunately, I think a lot of birdkeepers want to do their own thing with little or no thought to the sustainability of a captive held species.
Anyone interested in the Sustainable Aviculture Network should contact the Aviculural Society of SA or try SAN coordinator Matt Russell

hi guys my name is Matthew Russell i am from the founder the avicultural socity of south Australia and the founder of san and are keen to get it going but no matter what we do there just seems to be a low up take.i have down a grate deal of research in to the cause of fab breading and how to stabilize our bird numbers in Australia. the birds most at risk in Australian avicultura is exotic species due to the ban in importation. The exotic birds that are most at risk are our finches and softbills due to the shore breeding life. the cause of the instability in our bird numbers is $$$$$ people chacing the rear there for valuable to make the quick buck but what this causes is the a decline in the numbers of the more comon and more genetically stable populations decreasing there numbers and making them more genetically weaker as a species in Australia. i will keep it at that for now coz no one wants to read a long msg but if you want to do some thing to save a species pick bird and stick with it no matter what.

regard matt

ps i who ever has my email address on there posts can you plz take it down. i dont think you would like you personal email address posted with out any one asking you. no hard fillings

Good points Matt. I got into yellow rumps @ $300 a pr and at the moment here they are about $80 a pr. I am not concerned about the loss of $$$$ at all infact I increased the amount I have because I like them. With all my finches I keep I keep for that reason and at the end of the day if I get enough to feed them I am happy. I don't keep any foreign birds but would consider it for the right reasons. Being to sustain a breed in particular

Yes, as far as I am aware the Sustainable Aviculture Network does still exist and is coordinated by Matt Russell from the Avicultural Society of South Australia. Like you I must admit I havent heard what is happening, but there was a full report from the SAN at the Finches '11 Convention in May during the FInch Conservation Session.
I can follow up with Matt and provide more advice.

Can we (the members of the forum) get a representative of this forum to chat with Matthew Russell and Tim Nelson in more detail, with a view to seeing what worked and what didn't and why. Hopefully with their valuable input this forum can have an improved version setup for interested members. If it only works for a few and it helps sustain any of the finch species that may be in decline I feel it's a worthwhile exercise. Most of us have the anonymity of our Avatar and Private Messaging (PM) system on this site and choose who to reveal our identity too. Anyway each individual can make up their own mind to participate or not.
I am interested in purchasing any of the more unusual Lonchura species and/or their subspecies. Particularly the Asian Munias or New Guinea Mannikins. If you have some and wish to sell them, PM me with the type, quantity and price

I will buy related or unrelated birds. I am also happy to organise and pay freight from anywhere in Australia.
