Thats what i thought!!! so i set 4 mouse traps but havent caught any!!

WOuld they climb up and pull eggs out?

If your nests are easier to get to than your seed hopper, definately.
A couple of years ago we had a real mice plague in this area and the sods were taking over the nests left right and centre.
Had to empty each aviary in turn and get loose with the spade and waddie.

It doesn't sound like mice to me.
The eggs most likely are being ejected from the nest by either the breeding pair or another bird wanting the breeding spot.
Once the eggs hit the floor then most finches will eat the shell.It is for the same reason baked egg shells are fed in particular to Gouldians.
You would be surprised how many of our birds will eat discarded dead chicks, double bars and javas and St Helenas are three that I have seen often especially in my big flight.
I guess if you take into account infertile eggs,clutches dumped for many reasons etc the ratio of hatchings per eggs would be lucky to be 20% so there will be many disappointments.
Only count them when they are on the perch even then it is not clear sailing.
While I was away a pair of Painteds fledged 6 chicks and as it was very very hot they headed for a small pond and 3 promptly drowned, that is when it is so frustrating.

Well since i got on here last the cordons had laid again and build a new nest in the tea tree all seems much better this time and i think i can hear erm being fed.

Thanks mick. They have definatly got babies now i can hear them in the tea tree when the mum goes in to feed them!!!

Im realy excited..but i wont be fully happy until i got erm on there perch.

Well havent been here for awhile but they collapsed the nest in the tea trea so i built a large caged dome with hooks and stuffed it with tea tree for my cordons and theyve laid again.

Fingers crossed hopefully third time lucky hehehe

I have a pair of canaries behaving like that. Now on nest 5 - and not a single chick has made it past 2 weeks old. And over half the eggs have not hatched. Is it this erratic weather?

I think so the weather has been so off n on no consistency at all!!!!

Just fledged 4 zebras aswell lol. Wish it was something else...but still good nonetheless.
