Prices quickly drop as numbers increase. This has been repeated ad nauseum in recent years- pyrrhura conures, ringneck mutations etc etc. Even blue & gold macaws are dropping every year.
I think the days of high prices are over for many of these species.
At least with finches, even the most expensive species don't reach the crazy heights of the parrot world.
In the end a bird is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. Large, brightly coloured birds always attract attention and are in demand, especially if they also have the potential to talk! The pet side of birdkeeping is very popular and talks on bird behaviour are often sold out.
Personally, I much more enjoy the avicultural side of things, whatever the species. And finches are just great!!
I know all about it, seen it with cockatiels, lovebirds, $2000-$3000 for pied peach faces the ridiculous days of the Smith bros. handing over serious dollars for IR’s, etc. Lorikeets and now Rosella’s are at their peak.
It’s fine if you can time it right, get into it too late and you are just helping someone dispose of stock. (Think GCC)

From what I have seen of the pet bird market I wouldn’t want to be involved in it, although I have been tempted a few times.

Yes the coloured ring necks have run their course , was told by very knowledgeable bird keeper that greens and yellows will be the next flavour of the month .
Cannot find anyone willing to guarantee to sell me normal Quarrions and after looking high and low can not find pure normal red rumps that look very pure or normal .
Seems to be the big players in the parrot world see the birds as disposable items , not so much different to puppy mills IMO.

well I for one am really looking forward to linnie prices dropping so I can have a collection of the sweetest parrots to fly this earth

I presume they would be big Dollars but can anyone let me know what the Violet Ringnecks are selling for at this time.

jayburd i dont reckon it will be long before Linnies are in your price range.Given time it will probably be very hard to find green ones.How about trying to find pure neophemas these days ? A bird dealer in Adelaide told me 18 months ago not to pay more than $8000 for B&G macaws and said he had purchased several pairs for less.When you see how many are advertised surely there arent enough buyers out there with that sort of cash.The pet parrot market too is flooded !! You only have to look on petlink to see how many very messed up parrots will be around in years to come.
Love those violet ringnecks too E orix,really stunning,its just the noise

At a recent auction Violets went for $28 each and the fella I know that bought 25 mixed including a lot of violets got them for $20 each ...Good time to buy as a lot of people are getting out of ring necks and will go to very low prices.

The larger parrots with their super intelligent brains are an easy bird to mess up , they think and have emotions much like children . Just go to the Parrot Rescue Centres website and read some of the very sad stories about large parrots that have been totally crushed by idiot humans .
A good handrearer will wean the larger birds then spend another 6 weeks training them so they are ready for their role as companion bird but sadly most rush to wean them then send them on , new owners have no idea how to deal with these birds and within a few months the bird is resold or shoved in an aviary somewhere then yelled at for screeching .
These days there is no excuse for being ignorant with so much info at hand via the internet.
