Hey I was allowed to go but not knowing much it I didn't realise that it would be all wrapped up by 11:30AM. In spite of being "unknown" I was recognised by 3 people once I mentioned the Philippines. Looks like AFF is a Social Networking Site too. I met up with "Lonchura" and had a good chat about the regional differences in many of the Asian species. I think I even saw Russell Kingston. If he was flogging his book instead of birds I think I would have brought one. So great to see such a range of species and at such low prices compared to the Philippines. One "innovation" I noticed was a guy selling his birds in small carry cages with the door screwed shut for an extra $4 it is a great peace of mind. Needless to say there were finches flying around the Hall (I noticed a diamond Sparrow & what looked to by a Ptylla). Got to get that house and aviary going soon. I may have to get out of science and agricultural research in the first instance to get an income stream plenty of jobs for ecologists doing EIS for coal seam gas or other mining companies but they aren't in Brisbane.

There is a few people doing that these days, & a fair number of them don't charge for the boxes.

At the last sale we did people asked if they could buy the boxes the birds were in , outsmarted ourselves by saying yes as we now dont have any . Other half will have to get his finger out and build some more before the next sale .

$4 seems alot for srewing the door shut.
I did not drive up to the sale from the Gold Coast as I am not sure which direction I want to go with my birds at this stage.

South and into NSW - definitely a better direction.
Now a serious question. How small are these small carry cages? Anyone got a pic? I was thinking of making a few to give/sell to people who purchase birds from me and want to take them home in an old budgie cage.

I know at the finch society auctions here, all the birds are in holding/carry boxes and you automatically have $15 added to your birds price which you have to pay, but then you can move them to your own carry cage in the holding pens after the sale and you get about $14 of your $15 back when you hand the holding/carry box, or you can take their boxes home and return at a later date but you get less money back then.

Last year at the January QFS sale, I bought 2 pair of zebs which came in boxes.
I have attached 2 pictures of one of th boxes. I think the mesh is metal gutter guard which is about the correct width for these boxes.

Yep Madozzie that looks like the boxes I saw. I recon it's the way to go. Things are moving faster than I'm comfortable with but it does look like i can get some birds sooner than I thought possible. We put $30K on a house in Chapel Hill today to secure it. All much smaller than I'm used to - I'm a country boy at heart. Still there is plenty of room for a 10.0X2.5 bank of avairies - I just won't have a farm to harvest green seed from.
