My question remains why would you be happy to have your birds deliberately ingest disinfectant from their water supply? This product is made of highly toxic chemicals which I don't doubt kill all the microscopic bugs claimed. It was never intended to be given as a drinking additive and I question that any chemical agents powerful enough to kill what it kills does not also destroy gut flora when fed in solution regularly to birds and have other toxicity effects on the birds ingesting it regularly.
You only have to see what contact with it does to human skin to be extremely cautious with it.
If MF wrote an article advising you to offer detol solution to your children as a drink, would you?
Would agree entirely with your views on putting Virkon S in the drinking water, i think now a days many birdkeepers have gone way too far in their management of hygiene and are trying to provide a totally sterile enviroment for their birds, birds need to be subjected to bacteria and such.

Agreed .... natural diet = healthy bird with a good immune system that should be pretty resilient to disease .
Keep creating a sterile environment and the first cootie to hit the system will drop them like flies .

A little green algae in the water is actually beneficial ( in moderation) .

For many years I added Bleach to the water when soaking seed. Then I would rinse it and store it.
Then around 5 years ago I started using Virkon S in the water to soak my seed and have continued ever since.
I soak the seed for about 3 hours drain it very very well, then put it in containers and freeze it,I do not rinse it nothing.
The seed never smells musty and the birds still eat it readily.
I wouldn't dream of putting it in the drinking water though.
