Have this male gouldian which has an eye problem. His eye is puffy and shut I washed it with saline and added a wash with cold black tea. When I cleaned it with saline it had brown goo come out. A trend gave me some eye ointment called chlorsig 1%. What should I do keep cleaning it with saline and a wash of black tea or use the eye ointment or is there something else which I could do?

Chlorsig is an antibiotic for conjunctivitis. The bird sure looks like the eye is infected, possibly even from an injury / scratch. If it's a bad ulcer the chlorsig may not be enough. We had to use it on a dog 12 months ago and it healed up quickly but we were putting the drops in 3-4 times a day and also salt water washing before every time from memory.

Thanks natamambo I was considering salt water to wash but was afraid of it stinging, the injury would at least be 2 days old I would be thinking as I haven't seen him for at least 2 days but thus is the worst eye I have ever came across I i have finished the last bit of eye care 2 years ago and they don't make that ointment anymore. I will try the new ointment but if any better suggestions are available I'm all ears.

Just an update, gouldians eye is heaps better using chlorsig swelling has been reduced by 3/4 and eye is starting to open. I've only been able to apply cream 2 a day. Seems to work so this is another medicine for my cabinet.

Great info guys, Gouldians amoung other finches are always prone to eye infections and its a new medicine for me
On that note Blue gouldians seem to be affected by eye problems very often.
Thanks

Mackstaa, I wouldn't say this product will fix all eye problems but it has worked for me and I will try this ointment again if an eye problem occurs again. If you decide to use chlorsig for your birds its easily purchased at a chemist for around $10 which I've now purchased my own supply. Application is very easy with the ointment, cotton ear bud wiped under and around eye but not on the eye 2-3times a day (2 for me) for as long as required. Its been 9 days and would say that in another 3-4days he would be able to use that eye again. Please if you use this product let us know the result as its 1 for 1 with me but the bloke which me on to it swears by it with most cases and only sees a vet when it seems like it isn't working
